How To Make Money As A Freelance Writer

I have been spending a lot of time recently researching ways that people make good money online. And I am so glad I have been doing this, as I have found some awesome stuff!

The good news is that there are SO many ways that people have managed to replace their horrible day jobs with something which they enjoy doing, and it can all be done from their laptops!

And one of these ways I have come across is freelance writing.

There are so many professional freelance writers out there, and in this article I am going to break down the absolute basics about what freelance writing is all about, and how you can also get started!

Right, let’s get going!

What Is Freelance Writing?

Freelance writing, in a nutshell, is where you get paid to write pieces of content for business websites, blogs, etc in return for a fee.

You are never tied down to one employer, and are more of a contract type of worker where you can have multiple clients at the same time.

You typically get paid per article that you write, and with time and as you build up your brand name and portfolio, you can increase your fees per article.

What Types Of Freelance Writers Are There?

There are various types of freelance writers. These can be split into the following:

  • Blog writing. This is where you write articles for blogs (like Richard-T.com) and get paid. You may often write more than one article for any blog.
  • Ghost writing. This is where your name will not be publicly linked to any content. Maybe you write a book for someone or something similar.
  • SEO writer. You write SEO friendly content to help websites rank better on search engines.
  • Social media content creator. You create content to post on behalf of a website to their various social media platforms.
  • Copywriting. This is where you write text for businesses to use in advertisements and marketing campaigns.

How Much Money Can You Make As A Freelance Writer?

The million dollar question!

I have asked a number of professional freelance writers this exact question, and they can’t always give you an exact dollar figure. Reason being that it really depends on you, your quality of writing, your hustling abilities to find clients, and more.

However, I have deduced a few averages and will share them with you.

A few experienced writers say that at the very beginning of their freelance writing career with no experience whatsoever, they were earning $10 or more per post.

I know this doesn’t seem like much, but it’s just the start! You got to start somewhere, right?!

And those same people say that within a year they were able to start getting $100+ per post.

Not bad!

Then depending on you and your work ethic, you could grow it into a full on business. You could even start getting writers to join you and create a writing business with multiple writers. There really is so much you could do down this career path!

How Does One Become A Freelance Writer?

In order to become a freelance writer, you need to be able to string a few sentences together. That’s a given!

You don’t need a college or university degree or any other qualifications.

Nada!

So what are the best ways to become a freelance writer?

In short, you can break it down into THREE easy steps:

  1. FIND YOUR NICHE
  2. HAVE AN ONLINE PRESENCE & PORTFOLIO
  3. FIND JOBS

1. FIND YOUR NICHE

Firstly, you need to figure out what on Earth you want to write about!

Choosing your niche shouldn’t be too difficult.

What are you really passionate about? What do you feel you could write about for hours and hours on end without being bored or completely clueless?

Take that topic or niche, and write about that to start off with.

Write about what you know. It’s simple, and the best way to start!

2. HAVE AN ONLINE PRESENCE & PORTFOLIO

Next, you need to have a portfolio and an online presence for potential clients to be able to:

  1. Find out who you are; And
  2. To be able to actually see some of the work that you have done!

Without proof that you can, in fact, write articles, there is no chance anyone will be willing to pay you for your services.

The best way to have an online presence is to start your own blog which shows all of your own content. You can also write guest posts for other bloggers which you can link to potential clients.

3. FIND JOBS

And lastly, you need to find online jobs!

Find blogs which blog about your niche, and contact them directly.

Alternatively, you could write up your sales pitch and post them on freelance writing job boards such as Contena or ProBlogger.

How Do Freelance Writers Get Paid?

You don’t to have a registered company or anything like that to be able to get paid.

Most clients will pay you via money services like Paypal etc.

Just simply setup and account, and get started!

Conclusion

If you fee you are ready to go at the whole freelance writing business, then get started today!

What’s actually holding you back?

And what do you have to lose?

Nothing!
